What is a livestream?

Livestreaming software allows you to broadcast live events to your audience.

You can also engage with your audience, allowing them to comment, react, and chat directly on your live stream.

Many of these livestreaming platforms even allow you to share your feeds on your website, mobile app, and social media accounts.

Additionally, most livestreaming software consists of a hardware encoder. It allows RAW video input to be converted to digital format for playback on multiple devices.

You can also use streaming software to broadcast simultaneously on multiple platforms like social networks, OTT platforms, mobile applications, and websites. In addition to that, it allows you to edit, customize, and modify live streams according to your preferences.

What features should you look for in a livestream?

Modern livestream tools are more advanced than ever. Most of them offer intuitive and user-friendly interfaces to meet the varied requirements of the virtual world.

Here are a few features you should look for in streaming software:

  • Livechat - Livechat is a great feature that helps boost the engagement of your live stream. Thanks to the livechat function, you can interact with the audience and answer their questions. More importantly, you can also assess the reaction of your viewers, all in real time.
  • Preview editor - The preview editor allows you to take a quick look at your video clips. You can also make last-minute edits or create a new clip before uploading it.
  • Extensive themes/templates - Customizable themes make it easy to create a more personalized and immersive livestream experience. For example, adding a welcome screen and interval filling can make your livestream more personalized.
  • Multiview function - The multiview function allows you to keep an eye on all cameras. You can also switch between cameras in just a few clicks.
  • Real-time analytics - Having access to real-time statistics is essential to assess the success and engagement of your livestream. You can track all metrics like viewership, new subscribers, engagement based on geography, and demographics to keep your livestream user-centric.
  • API and SDK - A developer-friendly mobile SDK and API framework allow you to integrate your live stream into services, cloud video applications, and digital media streams.
  • Social media integration - Extensive social media integration will help you broadcast live on multiple platforms like YouTube and Twitch simultaneously.

Some options offer tons of features that you might not even need. However, there are some basic requirements that you need to consider.

How do you use streaming software?

The process of using streaming software is more or less the same regardless of the software vendor.

Here, I use XSplit to demonstrate how to use streaming software.

Xsplit supports livestreaming on multiple platforms, including YouTube and Twitch.

Before setting up broadcast output, enable 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) on Twitch.

You can't start streaming without 2FA.

Simply go to the Twitch security settings page and click on the “Set Up Two-Factor Authentication” option.

Xsplit Twitch Live Streaming Two-Factor Authentication

After clicking on the “Set Up Two-Factor Authentication” button, you will need to create a password and provide your mobile phone number. After completing all the details, you will receive a confirmation message.

After setting up 2-factor authentication, you now need to set up Twitch streaming output.

Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1. Click on the Broadcast > Set up a new release option. Then click on the “Twitch” button.

Twitch Account Set up

Step 2. Then, click the “Allow” button and sign in with the Twitch account you want to use. After that, click on the “Next” button.

Step 3. After verifying Twitch credentials, go through the setup wizard carefully to identify the connection speed, the best capture server, and resolution for your live stream. Once the settings are set, click on the “Finish” button.

Finally, it's time to start streaming on Twitch.

Here's how:

Step 1. Click on the “Broadcast” button and select the output you want to set.

Twitch Click Broadcast

Step 2. This is what the screen would look like on Twitch Properties.

Twitch Properties

Apart from that, it's essential to make the right settings.

Here's how to do it:

  • Identifying information : Select web authentication that stores your Twitch credentials. This happens after automatic or manual authorization. If you select web authentication credentials, you can authorize your account through the Twitch connection.
  • Twitch username : Select the Twitch username for the account you want to stream to.
  • Streaming key : Stream Key is a unique item that you'll find in streaming preferences on the Twitch dashboard.
  • Waiter : You can either use the automatic function or select the server with the lowest ping time. You can also choose the ingestion server each time before starting your livestream.

Summary.

It was all about the top 7 streaming software. All of these programs have the same objective: to broadcast live videos. That said, each has a few unique benefits. And some of them are even available for free.

For example, OBS Studio and Streamlabs OBS are great options if you're looking for an open-source solution. While these 2 tools are free, they come with most of the features needed for livestream and extensive integration capabilities.

Wirecast and vMix are more suited to larger businesses that want to produce large-scale live events.

On the other hand, XSplit Broadcaster is a good solution for players who need to live stream effectively on a low budget.

Carefully consider your needs and budget before making the final choice.
